The Sentence You Heard at Eight That Still Sets Your Income Ceiling

October 10, 2026

You know your worth. You’ve done the money mindset work. You understand value-based pricing and the law of attraction better than most.

And yet your income has a ceiling.

Every time you get close to it, something happens. A big expense appears out of nowhere. A deal falls through. Or you do it yourself: you undercharge, over-deliver for free, say yes to the wrong client. Then you’re back at the same number. Again.

Last week I introduced the Safety Gap: the space between knowing what to do and feeling safe enough to do it. Nowhere does it show up more clearly than with money.

Why Does Your Income Keep Returning to the Same Number?

Because you’re running two systems at once.

Your money goals are conscious. You chose them. They’re in your journal and on your vision board.

Your money rules are subconscious. You never chose them. They were installed long before you could evaluate them, and they have one job: to keep you safe, good and loved.

When a goal and a rule disagree, the rule wins. Every time.

Here’s what most money coaching misses: your money rules are almost never about money. They’re about belonging. “Good people don’t have too much.” “If I earn more than my parents, I’m betraying them.” “You can have meaning or money, but not both.”

No spreadsheet can override a rule like that. It isn’t protecting your bank account. It’s protecting your place in the family, your goodness, your soul.

How Can One Sentence Shape a Lifetime?

A child’s mind takes things literally. When a moment carries strong emotion, a single sentence can become a rule that runs for decades.

Carol (not her real name) grew up with a single mother who did her very best, but there was never enough. They rationed everything, even paper towels. At 46, Carol was still struggling. At the grocery store, she never asked what she wanted to eat. She asked, “What’s the absolute cheapest thing I can buy?”

I asked her one question: “Are you ready, willing and able to be rich?”

She wanted to shout yes. Something inside her answered no.

When we followed that feeling, it led her back to church. She was eight, listening to the minister read: “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.”

Her young mind took it literally. To be a good person, she had to stay broke.

One sentence. Heard once. And her entire financial life had been quietly organized to protect her soul.

A few years after that session, her income had more than tripled. She’s thriving in a career she loves, living with her husband in their dream home in the country, by a lake.

She didn’t learn a new money strategy. She removed the rule that made every strategy unsafe.

Where Do Your Money Rules Come From?

Money rules form in three places:

  • What you heard. A sermon. A parent’s offhand comment: “Money doesn’t grow on trees.” “Who do you think you are?”
  • What you witnessed. Parents arguing over bills. A mother’s anxiety at the end of the month.
  • What you were praised for. This is the one nobody suspects.

One man I worked with received a letter from his beloved uncle, written just before the uncle died: “What I most appreciate about you is that you have chosen to pursue meaning over money.” It felt like a gift. It also installed a rule: meaning or money, not both. For years he sabotaged every opportunity for abundance, while lying awake wondering whether his daughters could ever afford college.

The most powerful money rules don’t sound like limitations. They sound like virtues. That’s why they go unquestioned for so long.

Which Rule Is Running Your Money? Take the 2-Minute Money Rules Audit

Read each statement out loud, slowly. After each one, pause and notice your body. You’re not looking for what you think is true. You’re looking for what your body does.

  • It’s safe for me to have a lot of money.
  • I’m a good person if I’m financially abundant.
  • I can be a spiritual person and make a lot of money.
  • I can still be loved if I make a lot of money.
  • I’m a good son or daughter if I make more money than my parents.
  • It’s fair that I’m wealthy.

Most will feel neutral. One or two won’t. Your chest tightens. Your stomach drops. You feel a small, stubborn “no.”

That’s your rule. Write it down.

Then don’t argue with it. Repeating “I am wealthy” over a rule that says wealthy people are bad only starts a war inside you, and the rule has decades more practice. Rules don’t dissolve when you contradict them. They dissolve when you find the moment they were made and see it through the eyes of the adult you are now.

Who Do You Become When the Rule Is Gone?

Consider what that rule has been costing you. If it keeps your income even $10,000 a year below what it could be, that’s $50,000 over five years, and $100,000 over ten. Now imagine it gone.

When the rule dissolves, you don’t have to force yourself to charge more or receive more. It simply stops feeling dangerous. You name your fee without a speech to justify it. You receive a big payment and feel grateful, not guilty. Money becomes a tool for the meaning you care about, instead of its enemy.

And one day, standing in the grocery store, you notice you’re asking a different question. Not “What’s cheapest?” but “What would I love?”

That isn’t greed. It’s alignment.
